Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding. Proverbs 23:23
Buy it, the expanded explanation is invest in, purchase. In other words, find it of great cost.
Buying something means you value it. It is worth something to you.
You may even have given something to get it.
Like what? What would you possibly give to get truth?
What would the Lord honor or accept in exchange for the truth?
It certainly wouldn’t be money or anything of this world of any monetary value.
What could it be? What would it be?
There are clues in the word of God.
Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on Him,
If ye continue in My word, then are ye My disciples indeed;
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. John 8:31-32
There is part of a clue:
If you continue in My word…ye shall know the truth…
We also need wisdom, instruction and understanding from God, which will help us to grasp the truth.
We are to love the truth, not just like it but highly value it.
The truth is found in His word and Jesus is His word:
In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. John 1:1
What does that mean when you come across things that are not pleasant?
Some teachers soften the blow, they twist His word, change it, make the hard pills easier to swallow.
That is not loving the truth. Loving the truth means you accept it since it is God’s word
and you love it even when you don’t like it, even when you wish it wasn’t there.
Loving it means that you accept it and humble yourself before it and continue to value it
even if your thoughts and feelings do not appreciate it.
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God,
and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; 2 Corinthians 10:5
The verse right before it explains a bit more. That there can be a war in our minds.
Almost like the devil on one shoulder and the angel on the other.
(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal,
but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 2 Corinthians 10:4
That is why the proverb says, ‘buy the truth’. There is a cost involved. It is not free.
While it is freely given from the Lord, there is a price we must pay.
We have to value it as with all the hidden treasures of Heaven’s riches.
The truth is unattainable to one who does not value it. It will never mean anything to them,
so they’ll never be able to buy it. We have to understand its value and worth and what it will cost us.
Then we will sell all that we have to buy it.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls:
Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.
Matthew 13:45-46
Buy the truth and sell it not. Do not let go of what truth you have. Buy even more.
