Love covers a multitude of sin.
And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves:
for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8
That word charity that the King James uses always seems to exemplify
the love that scripture is talking about:
Extra giving, like a form of charity, that same love God has given to us,
where we expect nothing in return, but are giving for the Lord,
emptying oneself to extend that love that God has shown us, that agape love.
This covering is the same that Christ offers to cover our sin,
that sin of mankind that separates us from God.
The meaning of covering that we are encouraged to do is when we forgive or love our enemies.
The ultimate covering can only come from God.
He still asks us to honor Him by sharing His love with others even when they don’t deserve it.
Adam and Eve were hiding.
God gave them the covering, but at first they were hiding from God.
And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day:
and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God
amongst the trees of the garden. Genesis 3:8
Adam and Eve made themselves coverings of fig leaves.
God corrected that:
Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them. Genesis 3:21
And then the ultimate correction of the fall of mankind was made when Jesus hung on the cross,
in between Heaven and Earth to reconcile God and man once again in a more perfect way.
Hiding from God continues separation from God.
Jesus’ sacrifice brought reconciliation to those who humble themselves to receive it.
For this is My blood of the new testament,
which is shed for many for the remission of sins. Matthew 26:28
No hiding, showing sin to God so He can cleanse it.
If we try to take care of our own sin, we are rejecting His sacrifice.
Once we have accepted that we needed cleansing, we are to share what He has done for us,
and to demonstrate His love toward others, both the saved and the unsaved by sharing the gospel,
and speaking the truth in love.
With love, with charity, extending what we don’t have within us,
but that we allow the Lord to love others through us as an extension of Himself.
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another,
and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin. 1 John 1:7
Covering, not hiding. Loving, not condemning.
Giving what God has given to us in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ the Messiah.
