My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction; Proverbs 3:11
After a correction I was crying to the Lord. Asking Him why it had to be so harsh. It felt very harsh. I sought Him as to why I had to fall so hard.
The realization came to me that you only go down as far as you have gone up. In other words: the higher you go, the harder you fall.
The most famous example in the bible is David and Goliath. Goliath, who was huge, was mocking God, not just David, who was a small teenager. Goliath was mocking the armies of the Living God long before David came on the scene: And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God? 1 Samuel 17:26
Another example that comes to mind is Haman, who tried to destroy Mordechai and all the Jews:: So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king’s wrath pacified. Esther 7:10
Whether you’re a Christian or not, this law applies to you: And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. Matthew 23:12
If you give this some thought, I am sure you can think of situations where you or someone else has been justly humbled. It’s a law of God.
Once you give your life to Christ, that is, you have chosen to leave all behind and follow Him, allowing Him to correct you is what He is going to require of you. For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth. Proverbs 3:12
Take your lumps.
If He didn’t teach you, and left you where you were, then you would have to worry. It’s a good thing to have God teaching you and spending time on you. That is one way He demonstrates His love to us.
The more cleansing we experience, the less flesh we have operating in our lives, the more we learn of Him, the more we can be like Jesus, to be used of Him, to be able to use our talents, to be able to walk in His love, to help bring others to Him and thus have our lives count for Him.
But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.
1 Thessalonians 2:4
Getting to the place where we are asking Him to search our hearts is a mature place to be: Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:23-24
Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty Job 5:17
