Does God Hate?

This is a survey of the bible in which many verses are mentioned of God’s hate or loathing. All the verses are not here. Please do not get into a funk with these thoughts. We are not to hide our sin from God, we need His help to be the person He has created us to be.

Some of these scriptures are from the Old Testament, but remember,
“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” Hebrews 13:8
There are also plenty of things that God despises in the New Testament.

We all must come to an agreement with the Lord, carry our crosses daily and realize that none of us receives a free pass to Salvation. A free gift, yes, a free pass, no: “Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” Philippians 2:12

With those thoughts in mind, let’s survey the subject of God’s Hate:

God has emotions
We are made in His image
Yes, He does hate
And, like everything with God, His hatred is righteous

We all know God hates sin
and evil
And He hates some people
Jacob I loved, Esau I hated
He hates the wicked
He hates idolatry
God really hates pride
God hates divorce
He hates hiding of evil or violence
He despises hearts that run to evil

God hates these 7 things:
A proud look
A lying tongue
Hands that shed innocent blood
Haughty eyes
A heart that devises wicked schemes
Feet that make haste to run to evil
He who sows discord among the brethren

God hates a false balance (Proverbs 11:1)
He hates children being sacrificed to idols (Deuteronomy 12:31)
Devising Evil against your neighbor or loving a false oath (Zechariah 8:17)
God hates murderers (1 John 3:15)
He hates unforgiveness and bitterness (Matthew 5:22-24)
Lovers of themselves, blasphemers, unthankful, unholy (2 Timothy 3:2)

These people needed to judge themselves. They had lost their focus:
“I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies.” Amos 5:21

How might it feel to be thought of by God as a stench in His nostrils?
He hates idolatry and mentions rebellion in the verses before He said this:
“Which say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou. These are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day.” Isaiah 65:5

Although it must be there are some things left out here in this conversation, let’s not forget Satan: “And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.” Revelation 19:20

But after considering all these things, don’t despair:
“And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.” 1 John 4:16

Take any concerns you have to the Throne of God. Seek Him and though sins are mentioned here, Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross was enough to cleanse all sins confessed to Him: “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” Isaiah 1:18

We should all be constantly judging ourselves against the word of God, checking with Him to see if we have any wickedness in our hearts or minds: “And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” Psalm 139:24

And exposing and showing Him our sin so that He can cleanse us from all unrighteousness: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9

These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. 2 Timothy 3:2-7
