What stone could it be talking about?

They are talking about Jesus, the Chief Cornerstone, the Messiah who is the foundation of our faith.

As with all scriptures, this one has both surface and in-depth meanings. On the surface, it is talking about humbling yourself before the Lord or He will humble you. It also has a deeper meaning of who Christ is and His kingdom as is apparent in Daniel and Acts and 1 Peter and Psalms and many other scriptures that refer to the Cornerstone.

For this post, we are going to keep it simpler, about humility before the Lord.

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time. 1 Peter 5:6

There will be a time when those who have refused to humble themselves before the Lord will say to the rocks fall on us and hide us from the wrath of the Lord:
And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake;
and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; 
And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs,
when she is shaken of a mighty wind. 
And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. 
And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains,
and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man,
hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; 
And said to the mountains and rocks,
Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: 
For the great day of His wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand? Revelation 6:12-16

Those who refuse to acknowledge Christ as Lord will one day suffer the consequences of their refusal.
They have warnings and opportunities to humble themselves before Him. I do not know when those opportunities come to each person, none of us do. We only know what happens to us. Each person will give account for his or her life and choices regarding Jesus the Messiah.

it will not be a good day for those who have refused Him when He returns to the Earth.
They will then be greatly humbled.

God teaches us to look for the blessings. That is where we find Him.
He directs us when we have decisions to make.
While we might not have the violent life and death battles of old,
we still have battles and we need to make sure our hands and clean and our hearts are pure.

I had a French drain built that ended up being faulty.
The owner of the company said he would not correct it and he hung up on me.
The Lord told me to let it go. So I did.
There have been other times that I have had mistreatment and the Lord has fought for me.
Those times have been so smooth that it was obvious God’s hand was in each of them.

The Lord may or may not tell you He is with you.
It can get complicated. God does not like the widow and the orphan to be taken advantage of.
That means more than the widow and the orphan, but anyone who is in a weakened state.
God does not like it when people are taken advantage of.

Seek the Lord and listen.
Be willing to stand down if He makes it clear to you. Do not insist on making sure you are treated right.

I often wonder about that man who built the French drain improperly and refused to correct it,
if he will hear about it again on Judgment Day since he decided not to make things right with me.
He is a Christian. I know God was not pleased. I may never know.
I do know Vengeance belongs to God and He will repay all of us for every deed whether it be good or evil.

And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear:
for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands. 1 Samuel 17:47

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this,
To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

Time flies away like the wind. A moment it’s here and another moment, the memories are what remain.
Each moment is of value. Make it count.
Time does not stop for anyone or any thing.
It is here now and gone tomorrow.
Like the clouds are a vapor.

Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee:
verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah. Psalm 39:5

For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again. Psalm 78:39
The flesh will pass away, only what we do for Eternity will matter. God will reward our efforts to Him.
Choose His ways and all the emptiness will fade away and His righteousness will remain.

His days are like a shadow. A shadow, here this moment, gone the next. Full of nothing substantial.
You see it but you cannot grasp it. Its energy is unable to be caught.
Sure, snap a photo, which will be meaningless just like the shadow itself.
Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away. Psalm 144:4
Keep your eyes on the Eternal, the things in this world that matter which are not always easy to find.
Jesus is our treasure and our abundance in the Heavenly realm.

If we only plant things of this world, we shall have an empty basket.

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God,
to them who are the called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28

When you need wisdom or discernment:

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not;
and it shall be given him. James 1:5

How to get more faith:

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17

When you don’t know which way to go:

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

Humility before the Word of God, just in case you need to wonder who is right, you or God:

For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways,
and My thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9

Always seek and pray the Lord’s will:

For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. James 4:15
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Matthew 6:10

God’s word is powerful and accomplishes whatever He sends it forth to do:

For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. Isaiah 55:10-11

What if we sin?

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins,
and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

How to be wise:

And now, Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee,
but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love Him,
and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, Deuteronomy 10:12
The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death. Proverbs 14:27

How to find confidence in the Lord. When we obey the Lord, we know we are in His will:

In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge. Proverbs 14:26

If Israel is attacked, the Lord will fight for them. If they launch the attack, well, they better be sure God is directing them to do so.

History speaks for itself.

We can look in the Bible to see the multiple stories when Kings either sought the Lord about whether they should attack or not. Those who went against the Lord or who battled when they did not have the Lord’s blessing were greatly humbled.
This happened time and time again.

In this present day, we have the Holocaust which is brought to memory.
A world war was fought over it and those who oppressed the Jews were defeated.

Hitler and his minions did not fare well. Neither did Japan who fought against the allies who were trying to free the Jews.
The help came far too long into the ethnic cleansing of the Jews.

Then, we have the 6-Day War. A good example that God still takes care of the Jews as He has promised He would throughout scripture. Israel won a war in 6 days against several countries Egypt, Jordan, Syria and captured the Sinai Peninsula, the Gaza Strip, West Bank, East Jerusalem and Golan Heights. They would not have been able to do that without God’s help.

The voices against the Jews are loud today. They are a hated people. Their God will not let them down. He will bring about their Salvation as He has promised in scripture many times. God will fight for them if they look toward Him.

Maybe God won’t really rain down hailstones on our enemies.
Maybe He will send hornets.

Moreover the Lord thy God will send the hornet among them, until they that are left,
and hide themselves from thee, be destroyed. Deuteronomy 7:20

Or perhaps God will slay them with an angel.

And the Lord sent an angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valour,
and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria.
So he returned with shame of face to his own land.
And when he was come into the house of his god,
they that came forth of his own bowels slew him there with the sword. 2 Chronicles 32:21

Or, maybe He’ll just do the job Himself.

And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the Lord went out,
and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand:
and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses. 2 Kings 19:35

Whichever story you choose, and there are many more in the Bible where God fights for His people, know that He fights for us and takes care of us and does what He intends to do. We never know how God will fight for or how He will defend His people, us included.

That man does not need God.
He never will.

Sometimes that Old Man does things he’s not supposed to.
He brushes himself off and moves along.
He dwells within us, he is our flesh.
He tries to rule and reign, even once we have chosen to follow Christ.
There is no one who can push him aside if we choose to honor the Old Man instead of Christ.
The Old Man is familiar.
He’s not that bad, in fact, he’s a pretty good guy.
His home is in the most prominent spot.
We are used to him. We are used to his ways.

Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of Him that created him:
Colossians 3:9-10

The Old Man must go. The Old Man must also honor Christ.
While we are used to him, he cannot stay. He must leave.
Otherwise, we cannot be used by God to fulfill His purpose in our lives.

That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man,
which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Ephesians 4:22-24

Honoring Christ above the Old Man will bring us to the place of obedience.
Cast down those old thoughts and bring every thought to the obedience of Christ.
Walk in the newness of life given to each of us.

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God,
and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; 2 Corinthians 10:3-5

And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:
(For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;) 2 Peter 2:7-8

feeling vexed, hopeless, bothered
constantly hearing what sickens the heart
hope deferred
awaiting patiently
listening for direction
keeping the commandments
seeking His strength in times of trouble
joining in His sorrow for the evil in the world
praying, lifting Jesus up
finding refreshing to be able to go on
drinking the living water
eating the bread of life
filling our hearts with His presence amongst the circumstances

And the Lord said unto him,
Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem,
and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations
that be done in the midst thereof. Ezekiel 9:4

hating the world and the things thereof
holding fast to what is true
saving those you can before it is too late
warning
loving
keeping in line with Jesus and His ways
representing Him in the face of opposition
in the face of cruelty
in the face of pure evil
letting your light shine
let the light within you reflect Jesus
do not hide it
do not let it go out
it will be bright and some will hate that light
shine on

Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it,
and a book of remembrance was written before Him for them that feared the Lord,
and that thought upon His name. 
And they shall be Mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up My jewels;
and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth Him.
Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked,
between him that serveth God and him that serveth Him not. Malachi 3:8-10

Such a beautiful scripture that bears repeating. We can bask in His love.
And they shall be Mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up My jewels;
and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth Him. Malachi 3:9

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 
Speak unto the congregation, saying, Get you up from about the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.
And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him. 
And he spake unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men,
and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins. 
So they gat up from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side:
and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood in the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little children. 
And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that the Lord hath sent me to do all these works;
for I have not done them of mine own mind. If these men die the common death of all men,
or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then the Lord hath not sent me. 
But if the Lord make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up,
with all that appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit;
then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the Lord.

The Earth Swallows Up Korah

And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words,
that the ground clave asunder that was under them: 
And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses,
and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods. 
They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them:
and they perished from among the congregation. 
And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said,
Lest the earth swallow us up also. 
And there came out a fire from the Lord, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.
Numbers 16:23-35

And if swallowing them wasn’t enough, God continued and consumed those who offered incense.
The censors were to be used for holy use. God did not honor those who tried to cover their own sin.

Jesus Christ, the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8

And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments. Revelation 16:7

The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the Lord. Proverbs 16:33

Gideon’s fleece
And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said, 
Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only,
and it be dry upon all the earth beside,
then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said. 
And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together,
and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water. 
And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once:
let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece;
let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew. 
And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground. Judges 6:36-40

Hezekiah’s fleece
In those days Hezekiah was sick to the death, and prayed unto the Lord:
and He spake unto him, and He gave him a sign. 2 Kings 20:1-7, Isaiah told Hezekiah he was going to die.
Hezekiah wept and pleaded with the Lord and the prophet Isaiah said
you will be given fifteen more years and God will heal you and deliver you from the King of Assyria.
Hezekiah wanted a sign and he was then given one from God above.
And Hezekiah said unto Isaiah, What shall be the sign that the Lord will heal me,
and that I shall go up into the house of the Lord the third day? 
And Isaiah said, This sign shalt thou have of the Lord, that the Lord will do the thing that He hath spoken:
shall the shadow go forward ten degrees, or go back ten degrees? 
And Hezekiah answered, It is a light thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees:
nay, but let the shadow return backward ten degrees. 
And Isaiah the prophet cried unto the Lord: and he brought the shadow ten degrees backward,
by which it had gone down in the dial of Ahaz. 2 Kings 20:8-11

Elijah even needed confirmation. Jezebel was trying to kill him.
God gave him specific instructions:
And He said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord.
And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains,
and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind:
and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: 
And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
1 Kings 19:11-12. 1 Kings 19 is full of confirmations God gave to Elijah.
It is very apparent that Elijah was close to the Lord, following Him in all obedience.

There is not one story in the Bible that is in there for naught.
All of them are valuable and as examples of what the Lord has done for others in times past
that we may learn and our faith may grow in the Lord Jesus and recognize His infinite power and wisdom.

David had to wait years to be crowned after he was anointed.
He was faithful to wait and received signs from God along the way and was reminded of God’s will.
He also refused to force the issue by sparing Saul’s life multiple times
and telling all of his men not to lay a hand on Saul as David said many times: He is anointed of God.

When Jonah was on the boat, the men, who served other gods cast lots.
They knew there was an ultimate higher power who ran things.
When the lots fell on Jonah, they heard about his God and were more afraid. in the end,
they worshiped the One, True God of Heaven and Earth.
Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the Lord, and made vows.
Jonah 1:16

When we are unsure of God’s voice, the best thing we can do is keep seeking Him until God has made things clear.
He is gracious. If strong prophets of old needed confirmations of God’s voice, we also, at times, may need confirmations.
God will be faithful to make His way clear.
