Going the extra mile is not easy to do.
Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil:
but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also.
And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. Matthew 5:38-42
Serving God in this world is not so easy when He asks us to give when the people don’t deserve it.
People can be selfish and then on top of that, they don’t seem to care how what they do affects others.
Jesus wants us to be peacemakers. To let them win so-to-speak.
By aiming to be a peacemaker, we are putting Him first, we are in effect giving to Jesus and for Jesus.
We also can be disarming the foe.
God will deal with them if they have caused another harm.
Some of these people know the Lord and some do not.
Either way, can you imagine on the last day the Lord calling them to task?
He will if they have not repented.
We know they will be judged and will give account to everything they have done,
just like we all will.
Our forgiveness, that is, the attitude of love we have that Jesus calls us to extend to them
will give some of them pause. It may also bring them to their knees.
That is something we might not see or even know about.
None of that should matter to us anyway.
What we need to do is to love those who are unlovely in word or deed
and extend our grace and mercy to them like Jesus has to us.
Even though they don’t deserve it. Give, love and pour upon them mercy.
For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy;
and mercy rejoiceth against judgment. James 2:13
Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar,
and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;
Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother,
and then come and offer thy gift. Matthew 5:23-24
God wants to us to reconcile with others as much as is possible.
Do not let some earthly, material thing or squabble come in between you and your God.
Nothing is worth that. Keep your heart pure and full of love for Jesus and people
so that you can have clean hands and a pure heart.
God will reward you for all that you have given to Him.
