And the Lord God commanded the man, saying,
Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,
thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof
thou shalt surely die. Genesis 2:16-17
The first recorded words God spoke directly to Adam.
The story of Adam and Eve, and the way the devil twisted God’s words,
which still happens today, is a deeper lesson than most consider.
They had one job.
They couldn’t do it. The other trees weren’t enough for them.
That’s how Satan works. He makes what God has asked us to do sound so dull.
He wants us to take our focus off of the Lord and His Son, Jesus Christ.
It’s quite interesting that God spoke to Adam about the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil but He did not speak to Eve. Adam must’ve told Eve. She was easily beguiled, so Adam didn’t do a great job of explaining the importance of not taking from that tree.
We must learn from the Lord how to recognize the enemy. He is still trying to twist God’s words, to make them mean something that will catch us in a snare.
His ultimate goal is to stop God’s work through us and to keep us from knowing and trusting God.
Wherefore, let him who thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
1 Corinthians 10:12
Presumption is an ugly trait. Remain humble and listen.
Keep listening. Keep honoring, keep glorifying the Lord.
We will have many more temptations before we go be with the Lord.
Submit yourselves therefore to God.
Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7
