God speaks to His prophets. Yes, He gives them His words to give to others, but He always had relationships with His prophets. The Bible has many conversations when God spoke to His prophets, which were conversations between Him and each of them, and us as we read them.
Jonah heard from the Lord:
Now the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it;
for their wickedness is come up before Me. Jonah 1:1-2
That is when Jonah decided he would flee from the Lord because he was not interested in the task. We know that during his efforts to flee from the Lord, he found himself in the belly of a great fish and repented for his disobedience.
And the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the second time, saying,
Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city,
and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee. Jonah 3:1-2
Jonah gave them the word of the Lord, that the city would be overthrown.
Jonah knew God was rich in mercy. He considered his own flesh and reputation and how God might have compassion on Nineveh. And, just like Jonah suspected, God did have mercy on them and heard their prayers as they repented before the Lord and Jonah was angry.
The people listened to to the word of the Lord that Jonah gave. The king bowed himself before the Lord:
For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne,
and he laid his robe from him,
and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. Jonah 3:6
Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from His fierce anger, that we perish not? Jonah 3:9
And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way
and God repented of the evil, that He had said that He would do unto them;
and He did it not. Jonah 3:10
Jonah’s concerns were realized. Nineveh was not destroyed.
Then said the Lord, Doest thou well to be angry? Jonah 4:4
Jonah had no answer to that question. God knew how Jonah felt and Jonah had told him how he felt. Jonah felt he had been shamed in front of all the people of Nineveh. He did not answer the Lord, but went and sulked as he looked at Nineveh to see it was not being destroyed.
While he went, there was a gourd which grew quickly and gave Jonah some relief from the hot sun, but then, God sent a worm to destroy the gourd and Jonah was hot and frustrated, feeling defeated, embarrassed and forsaken.
And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd?
And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.
Then said the Lord, Thou hast had pity on the gourd,
for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow;
which came up in a night, and perished in a night:
And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city,
wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons
that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand;
and also much cattle? Jonah 4:9-11
God never apologizes because He is always right. To understand He is right, we must understand Him, get to know Him, find out His ways, lay our own lofty thoughts aside and listen intently. When God speaks, we have the assurance that He is God and we are not.
