Help Thou My Unbelief

You know when you have something that you’ve been asking God for? Something you may even know He’s going to do?
You know what His word says, you know His promises,
but still, it seems you’re missing a little faith?
Like you’re sinking, like Peter did when he was walking on the water
because the Lord told him to?
Just then, Jesus reached out His hand.
He reached Peter before He sank.
Or the man whose son was afflicted by an evil spirit,
I believe, Lord, help thou my unbelief.

And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears,
Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.
When Jesus saw that the people came running together,
He rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.
And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him:
and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead.
But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.
Mark 9:24-27

These particular stories were not put in the Bible by accident.
God understands and knows what we humans experience.
He put them there to help us.
To remind us because He loves us.
He put those promises there for our benefit,
or perhaps to reprimand us when we are slacking off,
not believing when we could,
so we can be encouraged that what He did for others, He will do for us.
Not because we demand it, but because He is faithful.

That doesn’t t mean we will necessarily walk on water.
But what it means is that, if He promises something to us,
if He asks something of us, He will see us through.
And, if we start to falter in those promises,
Jesus will be there to lift us up, to mend the gap, to give us the needed faith.

And immediately Jesus stretched forth His hand, and caught him,
and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
Matthew 14:31

The promises of God are yes and amen.
Even if things don’t work out exactly the way we think they should:
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God,
to them who are the called according to his purpose
. Romans 8:28
So give it up, give up your directions or orders toward God,
those directions on how you think things should go,
and trust that He directs your steps.
He orders each situation that has been placed in His hands,
and that He will fight for you and be your rearguard.
Rest in His Sovereignty and His wisdom and be humble before Him.
Be humble before Him, then, watch Him work things out how He sees fit.

Scriptural References:

And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them,
walking on the sea.
And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying,
Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
And Peter answered Him and said,
Lord, if it be Thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
And He said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship,
he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
And immediately Jesus stretched forth His hand, and caught him,
and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
Matthew 14:25-31

For all the promises of God in Him are yea, and in Him Amen,
unto the glory of God by us.
2 Corinthians 1:20
