I counsel thee to buy of Me gold tried in the fire…
How do you buy gold from God?
I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire,
that thou mayest be rich;
and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed,
and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear;
and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
Revelation 3:18
Jesus spoke this to the Laodicean Church.
The church that thought they had everything just right,
that they were rich and had need of nothing.
The lukewarm church.
So “to buy” does not mean with money,
we can figure that out.
But there is a cost.
What is it that we have to pay to purchase the gold and white raiment?
How can we buy this gold from God?
And the white raiment?
And where do we get the eye salve that we are to anoint our eyes with?
That shows that we are participants.
We have to do something.
It’s not just God taking care of things.
He shows us the way, we must walk in it.
We play a part.
We know that salvation is a free gift.
Walking with Jesus is not a free gift.
It is something we must choose to do or not.
We must take up our crosses and follow Him if we want to be His disciples.
We must obey His commands.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit:
a broken and a contrite heart,
O God, thou wilt not despise.
Psalm 51:17
Jesus spoke of being tried in the fire in Revelation.
What if we are that gold that is tried in the fire?
Job spoke of being tried in the fire:
But he knoweth the way that I take:
when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
Job 23:10
So, we know if Job participated, it was difficult,
and we know from his experiences that it is not easy to be tried.
The trying is going to strip us of worldly things so that we focus on Jesus.
We have to be willing, maybe that is the cost.
But let it be the hidden man of the heart,
in that which is not corruptible,
even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit,
which is in the sight of God of great price. 1 Peter 3:4
In the sight of God a great price.
Which goes along with this scipture.
This is what God is looking for:
For all those things hath mine hand made,
and all those things have been, saith the Lord:
but to this man will I look,
even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit,
and trembleth at my word.
Isaiah 66:2
If we are humble and contrite and tremble at His word,
we are on the right track.
If we have it all figured out
and consider ourselves complete and a finished work,
we are missing the boat.
That must be the eye salve.
To be able to see that you are without without the Lord
And I will bring the third part through the fire,
and will refine them as silver is refined,
and will try them as gold is tried:
they shall call on my name,
and I will hear them: I will say,
It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God.
Zechariah 13:9
Jesus talked about a pearl of great price
and the man who sold all that he had so he could buy that field.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field;
the which when a man hath found, he hideth,
and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath,
and buyeth that field.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man,
seeking goodly pearls:
who, when he had found one pearl of great price,
went and sold all that he had, and bought it.
Matthew 13:44-46
They put great value on the things of God.
This exhortation of buying gold goes right along with being lukewarm.
We need to be burning hot, sold out,
willing to give all that we have to follow Jesus.
Not complacent.
Not taking His sacrifice lightly.
Giving our all and living for Him,
Lest we be found lacking.
Highly value the things of God above all else.
