God was careful to add some of the faults of the characters in The Bible.
We see Abraham was afraid to let anyone know Sarah was his wife
because she was so beautiful.
And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister:
and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah. Genesis 28:2
Can we say coward? Or not trusting God?
We see Moses didn’t want to talk and God didn’t push it too much,
but He was less than pleased.
And Moses said unto the Lord,
O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore,
nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant:
but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue. Genesis 28:2
In spite of himself, God gave Moses a mouthpiece, his brother Aaron.
Jacob tricked and lied and God still elevated him to great levels
and Jacob carried the promises of Abraham and believed them as well.
We serve the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
His name is forever branded in God’s word.
The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers,
hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up,
and denied him in the presence of Pilate,
when he was determined to let him go. Acts 3:13
If we look at King David’s life, he did the census of Israel when Satan tempted him, And David’s heart smote him after that he had numbered the people.
And David said unto the Lord, I have sinned greatly in that I have done:
and now, I beseech thee, O Lord, take away the iniquity of thy servant;
for I have done very foolishly. 2 Samuel 24:10
But the Lord did not mention that later. He must have forgiven him?
He said, David did well, except for the situation with Uriah the Hittite.
Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord,
and turned not aside from any thing that He commanded him
all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite. 1 Kings 15:5
That situation brought much devastation to David’s house in many ways.
God was not pleased, yet, in spite of David’s sins and failings,
God used him and blessed him and most all, loved him and had mercy on him.
David was also forgiven for this matter, but it was still mentioned.
In Judges, we know of Samson who loved Delilah.
And before Delilah, he desired another woman:
Then his father and his mother said unto him,
Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren,
or among all my people,
that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines?
And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well.
But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the Lord,
that he sought an occasion against the Philistines:
for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel. Judges 14:3-4
We know the Lord allowed it because He said,
His parents did not know God was in this because
he would use him to bring down the Philistines.
The major prophets did not seem to have many faults listed that I can recall.
But when we get to the New Testament, Peter denied Christ
and Paul was an enemy of Christ until his eyes were opened.
All these things in spite of the men, the humans that God created and used.
None of them were perfect, without fault, without sin.
Yet, God knew them, communed with them and loved them
in spite of their weaknesses, in spite of their folly and in spite of their moments where they chose their own way and then corrected their course.
This is in no way to say we should excuse ourselves for our insufficiencies,
that is up to God, but it is a reminder that when we flub up,
either intentionally or not, we serve a loving, forgiving Savior
who is able to take our misgivings and still use us for His glory,
in spite of ourselves.
