Jesus Prayed at Gethsemane While the Disciples Slept

And He came out, and went, as He was wont, to the mount of Olives;
.and His disciples also followed Him.
And when He was at the place, He said unto them,
Pray that ye enter not into temptation.
And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast,
and kneeled down, and prayed,
Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from Me:
nevertheless not My will, but Thine, be done.

And there appeared an angel unto Him from heaven, strengthening Him.
And being in an agony He prayed more earnestly:
and His sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
And when He rose up from prayer, and was come to His disciples,
He found them sleeping for sorrow,
And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. lest ye enter into temptation
. Luke 22:39-46

And He cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter,
Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?
Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.
The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak. Mark 14:37-38

One hour
Jesus encouraged them to pray for one hour
so they would not enter into temptation
The disciples knew what was about to happen
Peter had just said this at the Last Supper:
Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended.
Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee,
That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.
Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.
Matthew 26:33-35
They were not ready
They let sorrow overtake them and did not submit their flesh to their spirits
They entered into temptation
They failed Jesus
Jesus was strengthened by an angel, not the disciples,
the people He had spent so much time with,
the ones He was familiar with, who scattered when He was arrested
They let Him down and they let themselves down
and they were not prepared
They were not watching and praying

That’s what we all need to be doing now, Watching and Praying
