Justifying Sin

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light,
we have fellowship one with another,
and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
1 John 1:7

When I was a young Christian, I had a friend who was an older lady
She was divorced and had met a married man
and she began a sexual relationship with him
She was a Christian and she would tell me about their relationship
I talked to the Lord about this situation
He said one sentence to me: Do not comfort her in her sin

I realized that her justification of her sin
gave her the freedom to talk about the relationship
I was around when it was blossoming
and after the admonition from the Lord,
comforting her in her sin was not something I wanted to do

Comforting others in their sin
is something we need to be very careful not to do
It can encourage them to justify their sin

Jesus encourages us to be salt and light and speak the truth in love
Otherwise, we may find ourselves working against the Lord
and what He is trying to do in their lives

I ran into this lady 30+ years later
She was still carrying on with that relationship
That is what can happen when you justify sin
It may become a part of you
and you can become numb to the Lord’s direction

The man has since died
I am praying the lady might’ve found repentance in her heart

Jesus said in different instances, Sin no more
Those words are so powerful
Sometimes people can fall back into sin
The important thing is to keep things on the table with Him,
not try to hide anything, or justify it, but before Him so He can help us
The mistake is in justifying sin,
thinking it’s okay, not that big of a deal
or thinking you can take care of it on your own
Once we accept our sin as a part of us
and something that we cannot overcome,
we have lost the battle and refused to try to overcome sin
If we are still trying to overcome with the power of Jesus’ blood,
we are in His grace
Not hiding, not justifying, just keeping it on the up and up at Jesus’ feet
to work toward making sin a thing of the past with His help

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh:
and these are contrary the one to the other:
so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. Galatians 5:16-17

Scriptural References:

Ye are the salt of the earth:
but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted?
it is thenceforth good for nothing,
but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
Ye are the light of the world.
A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel,
but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works,
and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Matthew 5:13-16

But speaking the truth in love,
may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
Ephesians 4:15

Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him,
Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more,
lest a worse thing come unto thee.
Mark 5:14

She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her,
Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
John 8:11
