Since it has been really hot lately, let’s see what the Bible says about Hell.
The Bible tells of Hell. The descriptions of it are few.
Psalm 139:8 says there is no way to escape God, even in Hell:
If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there:
if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.
Proverbs 27:20 tells us Hell is spacious:
Hell and destruction are never full;
so the eyes of man are never satisfied.
Isaiah 5:14 tells of Hell making herself bigger:
Therefore hell hath enlarged herself,
and opened her mouth without measure:
and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp,
and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.
From 2 Peter 2:4, we see that it’s dark and it has chains:
For if God spared not the angels that sinned,
but cast them down to hell,
and delivered them into chains of darkness,
to be reserved unto judgment;
Job mentions in 11:8 that Hell has depth:
It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do?
deeper than hell; what canst thou know?
Luke 16 gives the most vivid description of Hell:
And it came to pass, that the beggar died,
and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom:
the rich man also died, and was buried; v22
He was in torment:
And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments,
and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. v23
There is no water to quench thirst. There are flames that torment:
And he cried and said, Father Abraham,
have mercy on me, and send Lazarus,
that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue;
for I am tormented in this flame. v24
But Abraham said,
Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things,
and likewise Lazarus evil things:
but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. v25
Separation from others not in Hell:
And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed:
so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot;
neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. v26
The man pleaded with Abraham to send Lazarus to his brothers
to warn them about Hell:
Abraham saith unto him,
They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. v29
And he said, Nay, father Abraham:
but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. v30
And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets,
neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead. v31
We are eternal beings.
Mark 9:48 tells of Hell:
Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
And Matthew 13:42 describes Hell’s suffering:
And shall cast them into a furnace of fire:
there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 10:28 tells that both body and soul will be destroyed in Hell:
And fear not them which kill the body,
but are not able to kill the soul:
but rather fear Him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
While we are on Earth, James 3:6 shows we can be defiled by Hell:
And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity:
so is the tongue among our members,
that it defileth the whole body,
and setteth on fire the course of nature;
and it is set on fire of Hell.
There are Gates to Hell and Hell cannot prevail against the Church:
And I say also unto thee,
That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church;
and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
In Revelation 6:8, we see Hell participates in The End Times:
And I looked, and behold a pale horse:
and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him.
And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth,
to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death,
and with the beasts of the earth.
Revelation 20:13-14
Hell gives up her dead and then will be cast into the Lake of Fire:
And the sea gave up the dead which were in it;
and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them:
and they were judged every man according to their works.
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
Hi ,
I used to believe about hell the same way.
I started questioning what I had been taught and looked at the translations and what the early church leaders believed.
This led to believing in annihilation which fits with God’s revealed characteristics.
This is a post that I made on this subject. http://rayoflight2020.data.blog/2022/06/06/the-case-for-annihilation-of-the-unbelievers-the-wicked/

Hi Raymond, It is hard to imagine but it is impossible to change God’s word. He said what He said and Hell is what the Bible says it is.
