There are some places in the Old Testament
where God warned the people to purge the evil
You must purge the evil from among you
Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother:
so shalt thou put the evil away from among you. Deuteronomy 19:19
We are instructed not to touch the unclean thing
That is, anything that is of evil, not to engage in it, not to participate in it,
lest it infect us and we be led astray
Evil can dull our senses to the Lord
Like the parable of the sower:
When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not,
then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away
that which was sown in his heart.
This is he which received seed by the way side. Matthew 13:19
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers:
for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness?
and what communion hath light with darkness?
And what concord hath Christ with Belial?
or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?
And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols?
for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them,
and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord,
and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be My sons and daughters,
saith the Lord Almighty. 2 Corinthians 6:14-18
Walking with Christ is not a pick and choose kind of life
Christ shows us what He expects and we respond
If we refuse His insight, we might not hear from Him the next time
or we may find some other form of distance from Him
That is not a punishment, but God honors those who seek Him,
those who put Him first and those who draw near to Him:
Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you.
Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
James 4:8
