Be careful
Do not despise your birthright
And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:
And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage;
for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.
And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.
And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die:
and what profit shall this birthright do to me?
And Jacob said, Swear to me this day;
and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.
Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles;
and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way:
thus Esau despised his birthright. Genesis 25:29-34
For momentary pleasure, Esau gave up what was due to him
He did not care what might have been promised to him,
he didn’t even know what it was
We also don’t quite understand our birthright
It can be compared to all the riches in the heavens,
becoming heirs and joint heirs with Christ when we are born again
And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ;
if so be that we suffer with Him,
that we may be also glorified together. Romans 8:17
We have to be counted worthy,
we cannot just assume we will be counted worthy,
no matter what choices we make
If we do not value our birthright, it may not be there when the time comes
Be very careful what you choose in the world
Loving the world is something the Bible warns us about
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world.
If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 1 John 2:15
Jesus Himself was tempted of the devil to sell His birthright:
The Temptation of Jesus
Jesus warned us in parables and stories:
The Parable of the Ten Virgins
The Sermon on the Mount: Treasures in Heaven
The Parable of the Sower
The Temptation of Jesus
Selling your birthright can have dire consequences:
Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau,
who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.
For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance,
though he sought it carefully with tears. Hebrews 12:16-17
Selling your birthright, that is, not valuing God’s kingdom
As the times draw more evil,
we have, and will continue to see some who are ashamed of Jesus’ words,
who try to change what He said to smooth the waters
God wants us to reflect who He is and to love the truth,
to tell the truth to others, even if they do not want to hear it
if we refuse to do tell the truth of the word of God,
we are bowing to the world and trying to please humans
We can never change God’s words
We have been given a stern warning from Jesus Himself
if we are ashamed of Jesus or His words:
Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when He cometh in the glory of His Father with the holy angels. Mark 8:38
