Note Before Reading: This is commentary of one person. Think of it more as a bible study where each person might see something that someone else didn’t see. God’s word is multifaceted and alive. We will be learning about Jesus, from His Word, through all Eternity. This is just a peek, a few gems, there are many more. I pray that each of you can draw from the well of the Lord’s word, be fed your daily bread and that this might serve as salt to flavor some things you may not have noticed before. Let the Holy Spirit lead you and guide you into all truth.
The Sermon on the Mount
The greatest sermon ever preached.
And seeing the multitudes, He went up into a mountain:
and when He was set, His disciples came unto Him: v1
And He opened His mouth, and taught them, saying, v2
The Beatitudes
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. v3
The poor in spirit, not the poor in money or fame or recognition,
the poor in spirit. We think of ourselves as being rich in spirit, but that richness will not be fully recognized while we are on earth. We are often hoping God will replenish us, we are needing Him every step of the way, if we are following Him, because our flesh is constantly being denied. In other words, don’t focus on this world, focus on the Kingdom of Heaven.
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. v4
We mourn here, but we will not mourn after we die.
He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds. Psalm 147:3
Those who are hurting have an opportunity to reach out to God
more so than one whose lives are going along just fine.
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. v5
The meek are those who are humble before the Lord.
Fearing God, not man.
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness:
for they shall be filled. v6
Sounds so easy, doesn’t it?
It’s the type of work Jesus spoke of, to serve the Father, not the flesh.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. v7
Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. Luke 6:36
Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down,
and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom.
For with the same measure that ye mete
withal it shall be measured to you again. Luke 6:38
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. v8
Pouring out you heart to God is good.
Receiving His cleansing is how we are purified.
The cleansing only He can do, by His blood and by His Word.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. v9
Jesus is the Prince of Peace.
This peace is not peace of the world,, going along to get along.
This peace is between God and mankind.
One of the things God despises is one who sows discord among the brethren.
God loves peace and unity when it can be attained righteously by being gracious with others and not taking offense.
If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
Romans 12:18
It also is attained by spreading the gospel so that others may be able to find peace with God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake:
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. v10
Whenever we are persecuted by others for loving God or sharing the gospel,
we are in a blessed place by our Lord.
The world may not honor righteousness, but God does.
A further explanation are in the two following verses:
Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you,
and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. v11
Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven:
for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. v12
