Note Before Reading: This is commentary of one person. Think of it more as a bible study where each person might see something that someone else didn’t see. God’s word is multifaceted and alive. We will be learning about Jesus, from His Word, through all Eternity. This is just a peek, a few gems, there are many more. I pray that each of you can draw from the well of the Lord’s word, be fed your daily bread and that this might serve as salt to flavor some things you may not have noticed before. Let the Holy Spirit lead you and guide you into all truth.
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time,
Thou shalt not commit adultery: v27
As is written in the Ten Commandments, Exodus 20:14
But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her
hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. v28
God is always looking on the heart. He is not fooled.
If you lust in your heart, God is going to see that.
And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee:
for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish,
and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. v29
And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee:
for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish,
and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. v30
These two verses are similar. The message is to stay away from situations that will cause you to lose your ability to follow the Lord righteously.
The opportunities are always there.
As you are able, cut them off, so you are not enticed.
This is up to the hearer as to how to stop yourself from sinning.
If it means you don’t go to the bar, don’t go to the bar, if it means you don’t engage in certain situations, don’t go near them, if certain people give you an opportunity to sin or if they encourage you or minimize sin,
stay away from them.
Keep yourself clean from those things that will draw you into darkness.
Divorce
It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife,
let him give her a writing of divorcement: v31
He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.
And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife,
except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery:
and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
Matthew 19:8-9
But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife,
saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery:
and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery. v32
We cannot change the Words of God.
Many people have done this in our culture.
If this is you, divorce is something to take to the cross and talk to the Lord about.
Study His word and pray and fast.
Vows
Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time,
Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: v33
Better is it that thou shouldest not vow,
than that thou shouldest vow and not pay. Ecclesiastes 5:5
But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne: v34Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem;
for it is the city of the great King. v35
Jesus is saying here, don’t bother. It is beyond you, such as in James 4:15-16
For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.
But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.
Neither shalt thou swear by thy head,
because thou canst not make one hair white or black. v36
You can’t control everything and you can’t change everything.
But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay:
for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. v37
Say what you need to say and no more.
