Note Before Reading: This is commentary of one person. Think of it more as a bible study where each person might see something that someone else didn’t see. God’s word is multifaceted and alive. We will be learning about Jesus, from His Word, through all Eternity. This is just a peek, a few gems, there are many more. I pray that each of you can draw from the well of the Lord’s word, be fed your daily bread and that this might serve as salt to flavor some things you may not have noticed before. Let the Holy Spirit lead you and guide you into all truth.
Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance:
for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast.
Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. v16
Would you rather have the reward of men or the reward from God?
But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; v17
That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly. v18
Unto God, otherwise, if it is unto men, there is no reward from God,
but from what notoriety we might get from other humans.
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: v19
But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt,
and where thieves do not break through nor steal: v20
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. v21
Where is your treasure?
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field;
the which when a man hath found, he hideth,
and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price,
went and sold all that he had, and bought it. Matthew 13:44-46
The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single,
thy whole body shall be full of light. v22
Thine eye be single, in other words, focused. Focus on Jesus.
Keep Him at the center of all that you are.
And He is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning,
the firstborn from the dead;
that in all things He might have the preeminence. Colossians 1:18
That He might have the supremacy, first place in all things.
But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness.
If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! v23
If our affections are on things of darkness, including fleshly desires, lusts,
and we focus on those things instead of Jesus, our hearts will be swayed to follow another, whether ourselves or other mischievous ideas.
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one,
and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other.
Ye cannot serve God and mammon. v24
This all boils down to whom we serve.
I call heaven and earth to record this day against you,
that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing:
therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: Deuteronomy 30:19
Choose Life!
