Out of twelve, there was one
He was there, John, the disciple whom Jesus loved, as he called himself
Jesus loved all of the disciples
John called Himself that
Any of the disciples could have said the same thing
John knew that Jesus loved Him
He was solid in His relationship with Jesus
Rock solid
So much so that He was at Jesus’ crucifixion
John the Baptist would have been there,
and Noah,
and Moses,
and David,
and Daniel,
had they been alive
God the Father was there, of course, and Mary Magdeline
and Jesus’ mother Mary
Most likely the women were not in danger of being crucified
John stuck his neck out
It might’ve and probably did
make him more hated from those who heard about him being there
Who are my mothers and brothers?
Woman, behold thy son, Jesus said of John:
When Jesus therefore saw his mother,
and the disciple standing by, whom he loved,
he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! John 19:26
The mockers were there
Taking aim at Jesus
If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross and save yourself
echoing the very words of Satan
Peter denied him
The other disciples scattered
It must’ve been extremely frightening to be there
It also must’ve been a great comfort to Jesus that John was there
John didn’t understand quite yet even though Jesus had told him
The son of man must suffer and die and be raised again
There was God in the flesh, the Messiah, dying for all humankind,
lifted up on a cross between heaven and earth to reconcile humans to God, The Mediator between God and all humankind,
The King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Jesus the Christ
Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him,
and given him a name which is above every name:
That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
Philippians 2:9-11
