Have you ever tried waiting on the Lord before you pray?
To see what the Holy Spirit might pray through you?
Which scriptures might come to mind?
Try it.
He might even reveal His will.
Sometimes His will is not so obvious.
People in our culture have no time to wait.
They are always in a hurry… on to the next thing.
Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart:
wait, I say, on the Lord. Psalm 27:14
When Elijah needed to hear from the Lord, he had to wait.
Elijah had almost lost his life, there was no one else around to support him.
God commanded the crows to feed him while he fled the sword.
The wicked Queen Jezebel was slaying the prophets.
The Lord asked Elijah why he came before Him.
Elijah told Him. God already knew, of course.
The scripture doesn’t say how long he had to wait.
The Lord told him to stand before Him.
He waited through a windstorm, an earthquake and a fire.
This windstorm was so strong,
it tore the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces.
And He said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord.
And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind
rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord;
but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake;
but the Lord was not in the earthquake:
And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire:
and after the fire a still small voice.
And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle,
and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave.
And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said,
What doest thou here, Elijah?
And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts:
because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant,
thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword;
and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. 1 Kings 19:11-14
Elijah was conversing with the Lord God of Heaven and Earth.
He knew God was taking care of him.
He was hurting and distraught because the people were not following God.
He still felt alone from time to time.
He needed to hear from God.
After this time in Elijah’s life, it was soon after that God gave him Elisha.
Elijah didn’t even have to die when it was his time to leave this Earth.
God allowed Elijah’s enemy, and His own enemy, that wicked Jezebel,
to be eaten by dogs and pooped out on the ground.
And, Elijah was the prophet who proclaimed it beforehand.
She has no legacy except a memory that she was a wicked queen,
with a less than honorable death.
God worked powerful miracles back then and He still does now,
although we might not always recognize them.
God still fights for and protects His people.
The fear of the Lord then and now is helpful to know,
He does take care of the things that concern us as we wait on Him.
