Selfishness is not a fruit of the spirit.
Taking care of yourself and being selfish are two different things.
Remember when Martha was complaining about Mary not helping her?
Jesus wasn’t phased. Jesus answered and said unto her,
Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part,
which shall not be taken away from her. Luke 10:41-42
Serving the Lord is valuable.
Learning of Him is the most important thing we can do while we are on this Earth.
That is not a good, logical answer for those who walk in the flesh.
They will never understand by trying to make sense of it.
Once you taste the things of God, you can never get enough.
I suppose that is not true for everyone.
Some do taste of the Kingdom and they may never come back to the place where He called them.
Perhaps they are not willing to do what He asked them.
There is no way to know by trying to figure it out.
Being selfish would mean not caring about those the Lord gives you to care about.
If your life is dedicated to Jesus and He is first and foremost in your life, that is not selfish.
He will walk with you and instruct you to help those He gives you to minister to in His name.
Martha is a perfect example of who we should not listen to. Martha was filled with obligation.
Obligation is a cruel task-master.
Obedience and obligation are not the same thing.
Do what God calls you to do.
Help who you can, but do not submit to obligation of what others think you should do.
Obligation is an unhealthy idol. It will never be satisfied.
It will always demand or manipulate to get you to obey.
Those times you submit to the Lord to do something is a wonderful thing.
And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus,
giving thanks to God and the Father by Him. Colossians 3:17
Jesus can help you figure it out if you get confused. Don’t be selfish and don’t operate under obligation.
Be careful to honor the Lord God Almighty and guard your time with Him so you can grow in Him and His word.
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Matthew 5:6
